Origin and usefulness of the García Capurro´s retractor

Abstract

This communication deals with the origins, usefulness and indications of the García Capurro´s retractor, analyzed from the perspective of the development of surgical instruments, particularly abdominal retractors. The concepts proposed by Rafael García Capurro are presented to obtaining a wide and well-illuminated operating field as essential factors of safety and technical excellence. The conceptual bases that justify the construction of the instrument are analyzed from his original communication of 1955 by a personality that marked his era through a perfectionist and innovative vision of surgery is highlighted. In this context, the creation of the retractor that bears his name is understood.
