Psychoneuroimmunoendocrinology (PNIE) in Uruguay

In this article, we present a historical overview of Psychoneuroimmunoendocrinology (PNIE) in Uruguay, its scientific foundations, and postulates. PNIE is a transdisciplinary approach that considers the intermodulation of the psychological, neurological, immune, and endocrine systems, as well as the stressors or protective factors, bioemotional factors, and socioecological factors present in health and disease processes, and the impact of a person's history, present, and future expectations. In 1995, Dubourdieu initiated PNIE care in the Oncology Department of the Hospital de Clínicas, directed by Prof. Musé. Later, it was incorporated into other clinics, such as the Pereira Rossell Hospital, the Perez Scremini Foundation, and other health institutions and NGOs. In 2002, Dr. Ps. Dubourdieu and Dr. Algazi, a Cardiologist and Pediatrician, both graduates of the PINE Master's Program (Favaloro University, Buenos Aires), founded the Uruguayan PNIE Society (SUPNIE) and organized the First PNIE Scientific Conference with more than 100 medical professionals, psychologists, and nutritionists. SUNIE organizes scientific conferences and academic activities annually, and in 2008, the First Pan-American PNIE Congress. Within this framework, Dubourdieu, together with Professor Moguilevsky (Favaloro University), founded the Latin American Federation of PNIE (FLAPNIE). PNIE training in Uruguay began in 1995 at Centro Humana, later the SUPNIE Training Institute, and later expanded to university programs, including a postgraduate course directed by Dubourdieu and Algazi from 2003 to 2006 at the Catholic University of Uruguay (UCU). This was followed by a postgraduate program in 2007 and a Master's degree in Health and PNIE in 2022, developed by Dubourdieu and recognized by the Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC). SUPNIE has been operating for 22 years and today brings together approximately 180 active members promoting a comprehensive approach to health at the clinical, training, and research levels.
