The scientific work of Willem Einthoven is remembered on the 100th anniversary of his Nobel Prize (1924). His role in the creation of electrocardiography is highlighted, including the bases for the rational interpretation of the recordings. This founding activity of Einthoven promoted subsequent progress in the field, among which the developments of Thomas Lewis and Frank N. Wilson are cited.
