Reflections of Dr. Ñácate
Loose notes like glimpses into everyday life
Abstract
Carlos Stajano Cibils (1891-1976) was a prominent physician and writer. He was instrumental in the founding of the Uruguayan Surgical Society in 1920. An inveterate writer, his publications in the field of surgery were prolific. He also wrote about politics, philosophy, social life, pain, anguish, and tragedy. Everything passed through his pen, often with a keen critical eye, resulting in true literary gems. Many of his articles were published in El Terruño, a gaucho and nativist magazine published between 1917 and 1950, which originated at the initiative of a group of intellectuals who frequented the La Giralda café, under the direction of Agustín M. Smith. In 1941, El Terruño, which occasionally functioned as a publishing house, published Reflections of Dr. Ñácate: Loose Notes Like Behind the Scenes of Daily Life.
